A differential / gearbox breather acts as snorkel for your driveline components.  It ensures they don't fill with water and debris when off-roading.

When your vehicle is running at normal operating temperatures and your driveline components suddenly come into contact with water or mud, that change in temperature creates a vacuum inside your hot differential / gearbox. 

This pressure shift allows mud and water to enter your driveline components through the factory breathers or seals.

Correctly fitting a good quality breather kit to your vehicle will save your driveline components from premature failure, resulting in thousands of dollars of repair bills in some vehicles.
